Chanel 2011 Resort Collection

May 15, 2010

Once a year Karl Lagerfeld puts on an amazing show for Chanel’s resort collection. And every year, the direction this creative genius takes surprises and astonishes me. It’s like a whirlwind of emotions with this man. Maybe a bit extreme, but you get what I mean.

As usual, the setting for this lavish runway event was perfectly dreamy. The setting sun over the sea in the beautiful Saint-Tropez’s famous Sénéquier. A road-like runway in the centre with invited guests sitting in red wooden chairs all around.

A very feminine 70’s inspired collection had the crowd in awe, especially since it was quite the departure from last years oh-so dark and edgy collection. Long-tousled-tressed barefoot models in flowy florals and over-the-top accessories – what would a Chanel collection be without extreme jewelry – adorned the runway.

Lagerfeld says of the location and collection:

I spent many years of my life here…I know Saint-Tropez like I know Paris. The collection is very casual, very down-to-earth.

Claudia Schiffer Poses Nude (Pregnant) for German Vogue

May 12, 2010

Claudia Schiffer - Naked on the cover of German VogueEver since Demi Moore posed nude while she was pregnant for the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991 – I know, can you believe its been that long! – we’ve seen an increase number of women jump on that band wagon. The media has become so inundated with naked pregnant celebrities as of late that it feels almost like a chick fight during an episode of Jerry Springer – predictable.

Well, this certain celebrity/supermodel’s baby bump I don’t mind seeing on the cover of the June issue of German Vogue. Claudia Schiffer, in my opinion, is one of the classic, great supermodels of our time – gosh I feel old claiming that.  But it’s true.

And get this. The cover was shot by none other than the great Mr. Karl Lagerfeld! As if we don’t have enough reasons to love this man, the creative director of Chanel is also a seasoned and talented photographer! Talk about talented.

Anyhow, the June issue of Vogue isn’t just about seeing Claudia stark naked in all her prego-glory. It’s being rumoured to be completely dedicated to the supermodels career and filled with Claudia editorials. We’ll have to wait till June to find out if that rumour is true. But one thing we can say for sure, she looks absurdly beautiful pregnant. I mean, if I could look as good as she does before I pop, I’d die a happy, happy gal.

Harrods sells for £1.5 Billion

May 10, 2010

Harrods, London’s biggest luxury department store, was sold on Saturday to Qatar Holding for £1.5 billion (about $2.24 billion USD) – reports the NY times.

“It is a privilege for us to acquire Harrods, a unique company that combines an iconic luxury brand and one of the most prestigious retail properties in the world with best-in-class financial metrics,”

Ahmad al-Sayed, Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Holding, said in a statement.

Mohamed al Fayed, who bought the company in 1985 (for £615 million), has decided to retire and spend more time with his children and grandchildren – said Ken Costa,  chairmen of the investment bank advising the deal.

So let me get this straight. Selling Harrods had nothing to do with the fierce competition that the Harvey Nichols across the street was creating, or the current economic situations and its effects on Britain’s retail industry. Nor did it have to do with the fact that he sold the company for more than double the price he paid for it. Nope. He sold the joint to spend more time with his offspring and their offspring. How very sweet of him. Oddly though, he still has lots of time for his role as honorary chairman of the organization.

Let’s just hope the new owners will retain the original integrity of the organization.

Coco For Coca Cola Light

May 9, 2010

It’s always nice to see a CPG (consumer packaged good) pair up with a designer to release a limited edition product. Coca-Cola is notorious for putting out limited edition bottles, whether they are for the Olympics, World Cup or just collectors items. Well, they are at it again. Coca-Cola Light has teamed up with Chanels long-time designer Karl Lagerfeld to produce a limited edition bottle of Coke. And complete with this limited edition beverage, is a beautifully designed simple box that comes with a branded bottle opener cleverly hidden in a secret drawer. The design speaks to Lagerfeld’s artistic direction for Chanel as well as his own line, and really embodies him as an artist. What’s more amazing (maybe not more, but close), and frankly a little brilliant, is that they used Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha for the campaign. Coco dressed to look like Karl Lagerfeld, the designer of Coco Chanel. Tee hee – makes me giggle just thinking about it.

The Bottle says:

“The designer affixes his style and his famous silhouette on the bottle and delivers an exclusive creation with chic lines and also a unique box in limited edition, accompanied with a bottle-opener discreetly hidden in a drawer.”

I love this and hope to see more designers teaming up with CPG’s.

Oh and in case you were wondering, this delightful little package goes for about $60. Which is a pretty sweet penny for a bottle of Coke!

Sex in the City Two – New Trailer

April 20, 2010

After the first movie’s hype died down and the smoke on the whole Sex and the City spotlight cleared, I was able to make an objective opinion on the movie. I quickly realized that, while the movie was entertaining, it wasn’t worth the 1.5 hour wait outside the theatre, not to mention having to put up with all the crazy adolescent girls wearing prom dresses. All the build up that led to the culmination of the movie was just that – build up. Don’t get me wrong. It was a good movie. It just wasn’t as amazing as we all hoped it would be. And shortly after that movie, around the time when the sequel was announced, I vowed not to do that again. Well, as it turns out, marketers are really good at what they do! The latest Sex and the City 2 Trailer has me really excited for this movie. I’m seriously considering waiting in line and seeing it on the day it comes out. I know – how quickly we forget.

In any case. Have a peek…maybe you’ll see me in line 😉

Day Two: Jules Power & Preloved at LG Fashion Week 2010

April 5, 2010

About one week behind, but better late than never, Day Two of the LGFW, featuring Jules Power and Preloved.

Let’s start with Jules Power. I loved that this collection was a little bit of both casual and classic. It had office wear, casual wear and even bumming-around-in-my-house-on-a-Sunday wear. A very 60’s inspired collection had me in awe. I would pretty much wear anything she had on that runway – and I don’t say that too often. Very sweet indeed 🙂

Day One: IZMA at LG Fashion Week 2010

March 30, 2010

Toronto’s LG Fashion Week officially kicked off last night! Fall/Winter 2010 here we come! This fabulously stylish week commenced with the IZMA show at the Allstream Centre downtown. IZMA is a wonderful collaboration between designer Izzy Camilleri and fashion journalist Adrian Mainella. Together you get a fun-filled fury frenzy! Sorry, sometimes I get carried away.

What did I think of this line you ask? Good question! It was fan-friggen-tabulous! All that fur and leather was making me weak at the knees. On a serious note though. It’s not for those who are against animal usage for clothing – but really, when has high-end fashion ever been? Okay. That was a bit insensitive.

Don’t take my word for the beauty that was this collection – see my favourites below. Leather pants and fur stoles have never looked so good. Oh! And the finale dress. Sigh. Black can be a wedding dress…right??

Looking forward to the rest of this week.
